Are Bipolar Disorders Increased in Children and Adolescents?

Abstract
|
|
|
Background and Objectives：Bipolar disorders in children and adolescents were neglected; however there has been recent increase in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder among youths. The articles about recent A- merican trends in the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorders in children and adolescents were reviewed. The ob- jects of this paper are improving Korean clinical state of bipolar disorders in youths through these reviews.
Re- sults：There were many evidences that bipolar disorders diagnoses among children and adolescents had risen rapid- ly. The reasons of these trends were not clarified. However other than actual increase in prevalence rate, increased uses of SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) or stimulants, misdiagnoses of ADHD (attention deficit/hyperact- ivity disorder) or conduct disorder and changes of clinicians’ attitude toward bipolar disorders have a significant ef- fect on these trends.
Conclusion：We could not simply conclude that the prevalence of bipolar disorders in chil- dren and adolescents had been increased. However clinicians should be cautious in diagnosing irritable children and adolescents as bipolar disorders and other psychiatric disorders such as ADHD and conduct disorder, and prescribing SSRI or stimulants to them. Further studies with Korean young bipolar disorders patients should be warranted.
